The North Sea Saga is a trilogy of games that follow the progress of the Viking culture in 3 different eras using 3 very different types of game mechanics but united by art and history.
In Raiders of the North Sea you play a viking warrior raiding unsuspecting settlements. Assemble a crew, collect provisions and journey north to plunder gold, iron and livestock... even if it ends in a glorious death!
The game is a brilliant balance of strategy and simplicity. Start with a worker, do an action, pick up a worker (and possibly do a second action).
It is a perfect introductory worker placement game. In fact it might be THE perfect way to teach someone the basics of the genre.
And by Odin's beard, that makes it very worthy of our Spiel of Approval!

Big News
This episode also marks a momentous change coming for The Spiel.
This April the show will celebrate its 12th anniversary.
This June we will celebrate our 300th episode.
And on Episode 300, David Coleson will be retiring from the show.
Over the next nine episodes leading to June, we’ll be celebrating 300 shows and 12 years together as the dynamic dorks of gaming. We’ll be featuring an in-depth review as normal but we’ll be reviving some favorite segments from years past, too.
It will be a fun farewell tour. And a great way to send Dave into retirement.
It goes without saying, I’ll be very sad not to have my best pal across the mics but I am so glad Dave will have the time to pursue game design and see how far he can go in the industry! And I’m glad I will have a front row seat as a playtester and occasional editor along the way.
With that said, The Spiel will continue with me at the helm from episode 301 onward. I’m embracing this challenge and opportunity but I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t equal parts excited and freaked out.
It’s fun and frightening to start anew.
I’ll be spending the coming months deciding how the show will change. A new co-host? A team of contributors? Or go solo? All options are on the table. I have a core vision for the show and as long as I stay true to that, I think this reboot is going to be great. The fire still burns to build on the success of these 12 years and I am eager to see where this path leads.
Spiel on, indeed!
