Any Clues ?

I have a question for the US based Meeps out there.

I am reading a book at the moment that states that when the game "Cluedo" was published in the US as "Clue" they changed the name of the green pawn from "Reverand Green" to "Mr Green".

Can anyone confirm this ?
Does Clue only have the ley member Mr Green and if so why was he stripped of his office ?

[Apparently it is only in the US where this phenomenon occured. Other English speaking nations still have the Rev]

Just a bit of trivia but I'm interested nevertheless.

Indeed, the US version of Clue has him as Mr. Green.

I have no official idea why the change was made, I was reading some theories that stated that since the game was introduced in the US during a more conservative era, that a murdering Reverend would have been frowned upon by the public at large. Again, I have no...clue...*groan* if that is at all true, but it is an interesting theory.

And according to the Clue wikipedia page, which we know is the most accurate information source ever, they say that modern editions of Clue here in the US have changed him to Rev. Green. I still have my beat up copy from about 1983, so I can neither confirm or deny this info.

Ah - in England we expect our Reverands to be axe wielding maniacs (or, at least, cross dressers) in their private lives.
Otherwise they would just seem dull.

He is still Mr. Green per the Hasbro web site that includes a link to the current instructions. Who knows what logic was used by the marketing 'experts' at the company that released the game in the U.S.

I did find this site which posits the theory that the conservative American audience would not go for a game with a murderous minister. Seems like sound reasoning though there's no proof to back it up. The page also has a nice collection of different Rev./Mr. Green cards from many incarnations of the game.

Here's the link .

According to this wikipedia entry , the good reverend has had several first names: John, Colin, Gerald, Horatio, Thallo, Georgie and even Greta. This Reverend has identity issues!

I was hoping this thread was going to be about getting clues to this episode's Name That Game.
