I feel compelled to comment only because it is 3:00 in the morning, and for some reason I'm surfing the Spiel forums - IN MY SPIEL T-SHIRT! The meeples must be aligned or something. I think spending so much time trying to find random connections for the Backshelf Spotlight games has me noticing random connections everywhere.

I always enjoyed catching the odd episode of Northern Exposure when I was in High School. Cynthia Geary, the blond chick who was married to the old guy, is from right here in Jackson, MS. Also, I was a huge fan of Twin Peaks. I actually never saw it while the series was running. I discovered it years later and was able to rent all the episodes. As an occupational therapy student, I spent three months in Salem, OR for my psychiatric field-work at the Oregon State Hospital. Speaking of padded cells...Anyway, I took a day and drove up to Snoqualmie Falls, WA, where they shot much of the show. That was a strange experience. The locals were certainly not happy about being associated with Lynch's project. Still, it was a thrill to see 'Packard Mill' atop the falls. And yes, I stopped in at the cafe to have a slice of cherry pie and a good cup of joe.

One final, random connection...The film adaptation of Ken Kesey's book, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, was filmed at Oregon State Hospital. Later, I attended a seminar at the University of Alabama (of all places) where I heard Ken Kesey and Timothy Leary speak about the lack of activism on college campuses today. These guys were wild. They took questions from the audience at one point. The microphone was embedded in a large, plush UA football which was passed around the room from person to person as questions came up. I think half of the folks who stood to ask a question only really wanted to throw the football.

Someone did ask Leary about the Montreal 'Bed-In for Peace' in March of 1969 where he, along with John Lennon and Yoko Ono, participated in a recording of the song, Give Peace a Chance. In recounting the incident, he claimed to have been so stoned at the time that he was thinking, "Peas, Carrots, Give them all a chance!"

Can I go back to sleep now?

I ain't no freakin monument to justice!

Hey Scotty - that's so cool. Love the vignettes.

When I'm trying to get my children to eat their greens I normally sing the Prodigy's "Ebeneezer Good" song:

"peas are good, you know that peas are good"

(although it's actually a druggie song and should be "E"s are good but they don't know that)

Anyway - now I'm going to try out:

"All we are saying, is give Peas a chance"

Maybe Mark Chapman didn't like peas and carrots either. Hence his actions.

I don't have a Spiel T Shirt yet (hint hint, Steve, if you are reading. maybe you can wrap my copy of Rage and Spiel Dice up in one. XL please), but if I did then I'd be wearing it now.
Actually I wouldn't because I'm at work.

b.t.w is that Elvis Costello on your avatar ? If so, kudos.

Thanks, Steerpike. Nothing could make me happier than knowing that you'll be singing that to your children at mealtime. I can't sing at the table. Everyone would lose their appetites.

Anyway, my avatar is not, in fact, an image of Elvis Costello. It is, instead, the silhouette of my favorite filmmaker - Woody Allen.

However, I am a tremendous Elvis Costello fan. I'm always glad to meet another. I wouldn't have made it through college without Girls Girls Girls. Who could fail to appreciate lyrics like:

...well you

Hi Scotty,

Im not sure who I would give as my favourite director. I'm not a big movie fan as I prefer the written word to the acted word. I often seek out foreign language films with subtitles so that I've got something to read while I'm watching.
If not subtitles then I like a film to be 'wordy'. Which I guess probably fits a number of Woddy Allen's work.
I think my favourite wordy film is "Dogma" but it probably depends which day of the week you ask me.

I like many types of music but my wife tells me that I am only really into Indy. She's probably right.
I was a big fan of the Smiths (seeing them three tours in a row) but felt that Morrisey lost his way when he split up with Johnny Marr.
I always have time for Elvis Costello but my current top toes tappers would be Half Man Half Biscuit and Little Man Tate. Although I am going through a Rush phase at the moment as I have tickets to see them in November. Not had that pleasure since the Signals tour back in 1982.

I am SteerpikeCopy on Last.FM if you ever want to take my musical recommendations. Most people do not.
Similarly I try not to recommend books because I seem to be in a mionority of one in thinking that Gormenghast was the best fantasy series ever written and makes Lord of The Rings look like a childrens nursery rhyme.

I hadn't seen that feature before. Interesting stuff!

The thing is, I feel like we already have a nice little communitty growing right here. I'd have to split my effort between two different places if I started up a guild.

My gut says to spend time on our own forums right here at Spiel central. There are only so many hours in the day!

Stephen

I would tend to agree with the community aspect. The Geek feels like a huge buzzing metropolis which is kind of fun but can get pretty anonymous. The Spiel community feels more like a small hamlet in the middle of the Grain belt where you can still leave your door open at night. That little bit more friendly but full of strange characters who are related in bizarre (and possibly illegal) ways.

The Dice Tower has migrated to a BGG guild and already it feels different. But them I'm just sore because I can't get enough Geek Gold to load my normal avatar.

I like the idea of Spiel-town being the Lake Wobgeon of the greater game world. Thanks for that mental image!

We certainly already have our share of crazy characters (including you, Steerpike) and there's room for plenty more.

Our doors are always unlocked because there's always a game set-up on the kitchen table. We're just hoping you'll come in and play for a while...

Stephen

I tend to think of Spiel-Town more as Cicely, Alaska than Lake Wobegon (so not so much Grain Belt as the cusp of the new Alaskan Riviera as I believe one of the characters once said (are "Northern Exposure" references too obscure ? It was very popular in a cult following sort of way over here in the UK))

In which case I'd want to be the meta-physical DJ. Whatever his name was....

And, hey, I may be obsessive compulsive but I'm not crazy. Ask my pet rock.

Yes Cicely is a great choice. And probably more appropriate since Spiel-town is pretty far off the beaten path!

Northern Exposure has an avid following here, too. I wish one of the satellite or cable networks would show the reruns again. I watched the show, but didn't watch them in order when they first aired, so I know there are a lot of fun episodes I missed.

And here I was picturing Steerpike as the retired astronaut....

Or perhaps Spiel-town is near Twin Peaks. We do have mysterious connections in every show... I think Dave would be the log lady, for sure.

Stephen

Dave might be better as Adam from NE (although he does seem to be a lot more enthusiastic about everything than Adam). I recall one episode early on in NE when Joel and (oh darn, the pilot lady) looked across the water through a view glass and started saying, "Is that a dancing dwarf?" or something to that effect.

I wish one of the satellite or cable networks would show the reruns again.

It's on Universal HD at 5 & 11 PM Eastern.

Drat! I don't get that channel. But our tv blew up tonight (we were watching TV and buzz... POP! no picture, only sound), so we may be upgrading to an HD display and HD content sometime very soon.

Either way, I appreciate the info.

Stephen

If Spiel town is Twin Peaks I want to meet that lady who can tie a knot in a cherry stalk using just her tongue.

And I want a sweatshirt that says "SdJ" in big letters instead of "FBI"
