The big red pawn. From high stakes dice to story telling donkeys, our award season coverage continues with in-depth reviews of Vegas and Eselsbrücke, the final two nominees for the Spiel des Jahres, the most prestigious trophy in the game playing world. Then, we try to jump into the minds of the jury and predict the winner.

Spiel des Jahres Nominees: Vegas, Eselsbrücke
Predictions: our favorite, our selection, our prediction

Mail Bag: DnDeeples, Happy Meeple, Flip the Table, Lyle Otterbein, Shoe-lent, Cards Against Humanity, and Ravenloft card game

Complete Show Notes continue after the break.

Spiel des Jahres Nominees

Vegas   BGG  |  Ravensburger

Eselsbrücke (Donkey Bridge)  BGG  |  Schmidt Spiele

Kingdom Builder  BGG  |  Queen Games

Our Predictions

We divide our selections into three categories: our favorite game, the game we would select if we were on the jury, and finally the game we think the jury will selection (our "official" prediction).

Want to know what we think? Listen in and find out!

Mail Bag

Thanks to Kristof Tersago for correcting my bad pronunciation of the Dutch shuffleboard game Sjoelen. Think Shoe-lent, but without the T.

Danny Perelli is making nifty custom fantasy adventurer shaped wooden Meeples for games like Lords of Waterdeep. Check out his DnDeeples here.

Lyle Otterbein discovered a new dexterity game on his farm in Gas City. I'll speak for Carlos and myself and say we won't be trying it any time soon! :)

Check out a new online community for lighter style Euro games: Happy Meeple.

Thanks to Flip Florey for giving us the low-down on his new podcast Flip the Table.

Mark Taylor is concerned I give up my miniatures habit. Or at least find someone else to drive them around.

Michael Schmidt sent me info on Geas a fantasy themed card game which draws its inspiration from Durak. It was originally published in a Dragon magazine and meant to be incorporated into the Ravenloft fantasy campagin setting for D&D using an illustrated deck called the Vistani Tarrocka. Designer William Connors retains the rights to the game and has offered up a version playable with a standard deck of cards. I love it when the world of classic games and modern games collide. Awesome. Download the rules to Geas here.

Liz Williams wanted to make sure we knew about Cards Against Humanity. An adult oriented party game using the Apples to Apples mechanic. We don't own a copy yet, but it sounds like a good excuse to open a bottle of tequlia and have great time sometime soon!
