The Spiel Music

By afpabon - Posted on 07 May 2008

Last night my wife and I were browsing different channels on TV, and we saw Discovery Travel & Living presenting a show about wines in the Bordeaux region (an episode of VIP Weekends with Ian Wright). Being wine fans ourselves (even if by no means we're experts or anything), we decided to watch it for a while.

I was really suprised when, while Ian was tasting some wines, the music from the segment The List could be heard at the background. But what really came to me as a surprise was that the main music from The Spiel (that masterpiece we all love) could be heard later in the show as Ian Wright was making some other guy taste a wine to determine it's year.

What was that? I thought Dave, being a musician, composed most of the music for The Spiel. If this is actually the case, then I guess he sold the rights of those pieces to Discovery Network or something? Just curious...

While I am sure Dave and his musical cohorts could come up with something as fantastic as our theme music, alas, he is not the composer or the musician behind it.

Most of the musical interludes (including The Spiel theme music) are royalty free ditties included in Garage Band, the application I use to record and edit the show. Unfortunately, Apple does not credit the composer or musicians for these loops to my knowledge. If they did, I'd be sure to include them in the credits or mention them somewhere! A few of the musical clips I have made from scratch just because I enjoy playing with the software. I'm no musician, to be sure, but I have a decent ear for little snippets of sound.

Having spent thousands of hours in Garage Band, I hear the royalty free loops (like the ones you heard on the Discovery program) all over commercials and tv shows. I try not to be possessive when I hear "our song" but hearing that clarinet always grabs my attention.

I've been angling for Dave, his Dad, and Mark (all thre very accomplished musicians) to lay down some tunes for the show, but we haven't managed to get everything organized on that front. Even a live recording of some of the standard loops would be a treat.

Help me twist his arm.

Ok, so Dave... don't make me mad! Don't make me get to the US embasy in Colombia, wait 6 months for a visa, ask for a two week permission at work just to play games with you guys, all in an excuse to get a plane to Indianapolis just to twist your arm!

Ok, maybe not going to happen... but why wouldn't you want to create a unique sundtrack for The Spiel and it's fabulous segments? Go, Dave! We want to listen to your music!

I was going to post something a while ago because I have heard the Spiel music twice on the CBS sitcom "How I Met Your Mother."  I figured it was probably royalty-free music, but it was just funny to me hearing those familiar tunes on a network TV sitcom.
